An absolute feast for the eyes, but a harrowing psychological experience. It is a damning critique of what befalls women in heavily patriarchal societies - all done by focusing entirely on the women. Gong Li is at her best. The production design, the cinematography, the score, it all makes for an unforgettable film. Absolutely worth tracking down.
